Josep Simona has over two decades of experience as an environmental consultant, having led numerous environmental projects in the UK and Europe. He is an expert in air quality, noise, sustainability and climate change.

His fields of expertise have allowed him to deliver complex projects for a wide range of sectors, with special focus on road and rail infrastructure, defence, energy, minerals, industry, urban development, water and waste amongst others. His clients range from UK Government bodies to county, city and borough councils, agencies overseeing roads in the United Kingdom, Network Rail, HS2, the Environment Agency, and other public and private clients.

A significant portion of Josep’s work has involved delivering the detailed design of transport infrastructure projects, appraisal and assessment of their environmental impacts, and monitoring and re-assessing changes during the construction phase of such projects. He led the sound, noise, and vibration assessments of two major community areas in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire on HS2 Phase 2b, acted as Noise Lead in the Amey+Arup JV for National Highways’ smart motorways programme, and led in air quality and noise for the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements in Scotland.

In his role as Air Quality Advisor and Noise and Vibration Advisor to Kent County Council Planning Applications Group, Josep reviewed and advised on a vast number of planning applications related to minerals, energy, and waste.

Josep has published technical research on noise (‘Evolution in the law of transport noise in England’ on Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment).

Josep’s expertise includes particular specialisms such as the assessment of underwater acoustic impacts on fish and mammals, noise impacts on bird populations, the introduction of cost-benefit analysis to decide whether mitigation measures deliver value for money, BIM compliant reporting, and the consideration of social distributional impacts of noise and air quality.

Josep is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), a Member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (MIEnvSc), a Member of the Institute of Acoustics (MIOA), and a Member of the Institute of Air Quality Management (MIAQM).
